Technical requirements
We recommend an iPhone 12 or later model. The app works on all iPhones from 8 and onward with at least IOS 15. So getting started by trying it out on an older device first is fine. You can also use the app on newer iPad models.
An internet connection is required to add new horses, upload recordings, and receive analysis results. However, you can save recordings locally for existing horses on your account and upload them for analysis later when you have a stable internet connection.
If you are going to record a new horse when you have no internet connection, you can always record on another horse profile and then ask us to move the recording to correct horse when it is uploaded.

Using Sleip actively involves uploading large video files and viewing streamed videos. If you plan to use Sleip on a mobile internet connection, we recommend an unlimited data plan for the best experience.
To get a result within 5 minutes we recommend that you have an uploading speed of 20 Mbps. Remember that full reception does not always mean that you have a good uploading speed. See more under "Uploading video, accessing, and sharing results"

Recording video
Watch how to record straight line and longing here.
Sleip only measures asymmetries from trot, meaning you will not get an analysis result from a recording of a horse walking. However, many of our customers find the tracking video useful for documentation of other gaits as well. The recording will automatically be labeled with the gait spotted in the recording.
No as long as the ground is even. The horse may compensate for uneven ground, getting a higher stride variation and you may get false measurements.
Yes, for example, bell boots and saddle work, but you shouldn’t have a blanket or other objects covering the view of the horse's legs, hind, and head.
Yes, you can perform analyses of ridden horses as well. Record as usual, Sleip will detect the rider automatically and label the recording with a helmet in the list on the horse's profile. Please be aware that a rider can influence the motion pattern, especially when performing a posting trot.
To get the best measurements the rider should aim to keep the reins loose so the horse can move its head freely and either sit down or stand up during the recording.
Avoid having other horses moving in front of the camera while recording, as the AI may follow the wrong horse. This can also affect the processing time. Horses standing still shouldn't cause any issues.
Yes, to evaluate your data correctly, you need to longe the horse in both directions, at least during your baseline measurement. This is because every horse shows certain asymmetry patterns on a circle, which is due to circle-induced asymmetries. To be able to assess these asymmetries correctly, a combination of the left and right circles is needed. Remember to longe the horse in one direction per recording.
You should only record the horse from the outside of the circle, as Sleip is not yet adapted for recording from the inside.
How to record longeing
Uploading video, accessing, and sharing results
If you see a “Delayed” label, it means that Sleip was unable to automatically identify enough trotting strides and the recording ended up in manual review. Our technicians will attend to the issue at their earliest convenience and try to resolve it if possible. If your recording gets labeled “Delayed”, we recommend that you record a new video if possible as it is not certain we’ll be able to produce a result from the original recording.
If your analysis results are incomplete and your recording is labeled with a “View issues” label, we recommend that you create another recording. “View issues” means that Sleip has not been able to produce a reliable analysis because too few strides were captured from the recording. Common reasons for this include:
- The recording of the horse was too short
- The horse you recorded had a blanket on
- There were other horses moving in the background
- There was a fence between you and the horse
- The camera was not steady enough when recording
- The horse was recorded longeing in both directions in one recording. You need to record two separate recordings for the two directions.
- Sand or sand dust covered parts of the horse's leg.
If you capture enough strides for either the front or the hind but not for both you will only receive the measurements for the part where you collected enough strides.
When you lunge a horse, you need to do two recordings of the two different directions and then combine them to get full-length results. We don’t use the summary view horse illustration for longeing since it is two measurements combined.
After you have stopped the recording, you will get the option to delete or upload.
Yes, contact us at hello@sleip.com, stating the name of the horse where the video is now, what time it was done and to which horse you want it moved to.
You can download the analysis video by clicking the downloading icon you find under the battery icon in the top right corner. If you want a copy of the original video , you need to click on it to play it and then make a screen recording from your phone. We recommend you turn the phone to landscape mode to enlarge the view of the original video.
How to record your screen on an iPhone: Screen recording guide
The reason you need to use Sleip to record videos is that we are recording a lot more than "just" the video, we use many of the sensors and features of the phone to ensure good data collection. This data is also used to improve the quality of the analysis.
But you can invite others to record with Sleip and get sent the results of that recording. See below.
You can delay the uploading of your recordings until you have a better connection. The recordings are saved locally on your phone until you manually activate the upload. You will find the videos you haven’t uploaded in the list of recordings. Avoid jumping between connections when you upload a video, as this can slow down the process.
Even though you may have many bars indicating that you have good reception and download speed, it doesn't automatically mean that your upload speed is as great. To get a result back in 5 minutes or less, we recommend a 20 Mbps upload speed.
There are a few things you can do to help speed up the process of getting a result.
- Limit recording time; the minimum requirement for the analysis is 10 forelimb strides and 10 hindlimb strides. But 20 aiming for 20 strides will give you a more qualitative analysis.
- Record in good lighting
- Avoid having other horses in view
- Keep the camera stable
- Avoid switching between connections while uploading
You share the results of a measurement in two ways. You'll find the buttons for both options at the top of the summary page of the analysis you want to share. You can either share a PDF with a summary of the result or you can share a link to a webpage containing the full analysis, including the videos. The link will expire after 30 days, but you can generate a new one at any time.
At the moment, it is only possible to share one analysis at a time. However, we are working on making it possible to share multiple results in one go.
Manage my horses
Click the edit button you find under the horses image and you will see a trash bin up in the right corner. You can also edit any information you have filled in about the horse.
Horses are sorted in alphabetical order and you can search for a particular horse by entering its name or its owners name in the search field at the top of the list. You can also click the sorting button where you can change it so the latest recorded horse will show up at the top of the list.
Send us an email at hello@sleip.com with details on the recording (s) you need to be moved - which horse profile you have recorded it under, the date and time of the recording and to witch horse profile you would like the recording moved and we will move it for you.
Yes, contact us via hello@sleip.com and we will help you.

In the horse view, on the right by the horse name, there is an edit icon. Click this to add a photo and edit other information about the horse.
Understanding the results
No, Sleip provides precise measurements of asymmetries and illustrates the level of asymmetry using colours. These measurements support veterinary lameness diagnostic work. Monitoring horses for asymmetries and changes to the movement pattern can contribute to the early detection of potential issues.
To the right of the horse's name, you will find a right icon showing two documents with arrows. Click on the icon and then select any two results you want to compare.
You can find blogs, webinars, case studies and a lot of other content by visiting our knowledge hub
Arrows up and down indicate it was a straight line recording.
A left or right arrow means it is a longing recording.
A syringe indicates that the recording has been tagged with a diagnostic analgesia performed.
An icon of a person with an arrow means that the recording comes from a recorder user that you have invited.
A helmet means that it was a ridden recording, something Sleip automatically detects.
Measurements interpretation
You can start by deactivating sharing on horses you no longer need to share. If you don’t have any such horse, contact us and we will help you increase the number of horses you can have shared.
Click the icon of two people to the right of the horse's name to see all the recorder users you have shared the horse to. Under each user, there is a button for revoking access which will deactivate sharing.
No, that is up to you. Currently, you have to manually deactivate sharings you don’t need to have active anymore.
Whoever should record a horse for you that has access to an iPhone 8 or later or a newer iPad. You only need a name and an email address to invite a recorder user.
Double-check that you have entered the client's email correctly and ask the client to check their spam folder for the invite email. The client can also try to ask for a new password, using the "forgot password" link in the app. If your client still cannot log in, please contact us for assistance.
At the top of the list of your horses, you'll find a button with the text “Shared”. Click it to see all your shared horses and search among them.
Start by logging in with the credentials you received in the invite from Sleip. If you cannot find the email, please check your spam folder.
Your horse will already be added to your account, so you can start recording directly. We recommend watching the instructional videos before you create your first recording.
