We recommend using an iPhone 13 or newer for the best experience. However, the Sleip app works on all iPhones from iPhone 8 and up, as long as they’re running iOS 16.4 or later. If you're just getting started, an older device will work fine for testing. The app also works on newer iPad models.
Recommended devices for recording:
iPhones
iPads
Using Sleip involves uploading high-quality video files and viewing streamed analysis results. If you plan to use the app over a mobile connection, we recommend an unlimited data plan for the best experience.
An internet connection is required to add new horses, upload recordings, and receive analysis results. However, if you're offline, you can still record videos for existing horses on your account and upload them later when you’re connected.
If you need to record a new horse without internet access, you can temporarily record under a different profile and contact us to move the recording once it's uploaded.
To get analysis results back in minutes, a stable internet connection with good upload speed (15-20 Mbps) is recommended.
To receive analysis results within 5 minutes, we recommend an upload speed of at least 15-20 Mbps. Keep in mind that having full signal bars doesn’t always mean fast upload speeds.

You’ll find instructional videos in the Sleip app and on our website under User guides.
Yes — you can record at walk or canter for documentation purposes, Sleip will automatically detect and label the gait. However, analysis results are only available for trot recordings, as asymmetry is measured in trot.
The surface should be even and level. While Sleip works on most surfaces, uneven or sloping ground may cause the horse to compensate, which can lead to higher stride variation and less reliable asymmetry measurements.
Yes — equipment like bell boots or a saddle is fine. Just make sure nothing is covering the legs, head, or hindquarters, such as a rug, as this can interfere with the analysis.
Yes, Sleip supports ridden analysis. The app will automatically detect the rider and label the recording with a helmet icon in the horse’s profile. Be aware that a rider — especially during posting trot — can influence motion patterns.
To ensure the best results, the rider should either sit or stand up consistently during the trot and use loose reins to allow free head movement.
Avoid having other horses moving in front of the camera, as this can affect processing and delay results. Horses standing still nearby generally don’t cause any issues.
Yes. To correctly interpret circle-induced asymmetries, the horse must be recorded in both directions — especially during baseline measurements. Record one direction per video, and make sure the horse is trotting consistently.
We recommend recording from the outside of the circle, as Sleip is currently not optimised for inside-circle recordings.
If your video is labelled “Delayed”, it means Sleip couldn’t automatically detect enough trot strides, and the recording has been sent for manual review. Our team will review it as soon as possible, but we recommend recording a new video if you can, as there’s no guarantee we’ll be able to generate a result from the original.
This means the recording didn’t capture enough usable trot strides for a reliable analysis. Common causes include:
We recommend recording a new video to get better results.
If the recording only captured enough trot strides for either the forelimbs or the hindlimbs — but not both — you’ll only receive partial results. To get a complete analysis, you need to record each direction separately when longeing, and then combine the two recordings in the app. Note: We don’t display the horse illustration in the summary view for longeing, as the results are based on combined data.
After stopping the recording, you’ll see an option to delete or upload the video. Choose delete if you don’t want to upload it.

Yes. To download the analysis video, click the download icon in the Analysis video tab. You'll find it under the battery icon in the top right corner. To download the original video, go to the Summary tab use the “share analysis link” in the top right corner, open the webpage and download from there.
You can also make a screen recording on your phone. For the best view, turn your phone to landscape mode. How to record your screen on an iPhone
No — the Sleip app must be used for recording. In addition to video, we capture sensor data from the phone (like motion and orientation), which is essential for accurate analysis. However, with the Sleip Remote add-on to your subscription, you can invite others to record using the app and receive the results from their recordings.
You can wait and upload later when you have a more stable connection. Recordings are stored locally on your phone until you're ready to upload them. Avoid switching between networks while uploading, as this can slow things down or interrupt the process.
Having full signal bars doesn’t always mean your upload speed is strong. For results in 5 minutes or less, we recommend an upload speed of at least 15-20 Mbps.
To speed up processing, try the following:
In the Summary tab of any analysis, you’ll find two sharing options (just under the battery icon):
Shared links expire after 30 days, but you can generate a new one at any time.
Yes—you can share up to 10 measurements in one go.
Tap the edit icon under the horse’s image. From there, you can update the horse’s details or tap the trash bin icon in the top right corner to delete the profile.
Horses are listed in alphabetical order by default. Use the search bar at the top of the list to find a horse by name or owner. You can also tap the sort button to change the order — for example, to show the most recently recorded horse first.

Yes. In the horse view, click the edit icon next to the horse’s name to upload a photo or update any other details.
No — Sleip does not diagnose lameness. It provides precise and objective measurements of asymmetry, including colour-coded indicators of the levels of asymmetry, from mild to severe. These measurements are designed to support veterinary diagnostic work as asymmetries in movement may indicate that the horse is unloading a painful limb to reduce strain.
Yes. Under the horse's name, tap the comparison icon (two overlapping squares). Then select any two recordings you'd like to compare.
You’ll find detailed guides in the app — just tap the information (i) icon next to the data you want to explore. You can also visit the User Guides section on our website, and explore additional resources on our Webinars and Case studies pages. Our Articles pages feature interviews with users and useful blogs. .
Here’s a quick guide to the icons you’ll see on recordings:
Straight line recording
Directional arrows indicate a longeing recording (left or right circle)
A syringe indicates that the recording has been labeled with a diagnostic analgesia performed
A helmet means that a rider was detected in the recording
The information icon lead to guides on interpretation of data and views
Trends icon. This feature allows you to view longitudinal asymmetry data displayed chronologically in a clear trend graph. Tap the icon in the recording list of the selected horse. You can only view a trend for one horse at a time and you need recordings from at least 4 different days to generate a pattern.
Comparison icon. This feature allows you to compare any two analysis results. Simply tap the icon and select any to analysis to access a comparison view. This will also give you the percentage difference between the two measurements. The feature is particularly useful in evaluating the effect of diagnostic analgesia and to document progress.
Edit icon. You can edit details on the horse's profile page and add or change profile image at any time.
Shared access to record. Tap this icon to manage invitations and access to record a horse remotely.
Export and share results using this icon, via web link or PDF.
Download icon. You can access this from the Analysis video view to download the analysis video.
Avoid having other horses moving in front of the camera while recording a horse trotting if you can. Other moving horses can affect the video processing and cause issues, sometimes leading to delayed results. Horses standing still usually don't cause any issues.
Yes, to evaluate your data correctly, you need to longe the horse in both directions, at least during your baseline measurement. This is because every horse shows certain asymmetry patterns on a circle, which is due to circle-induced asymmetries. To be able to assess these asymmetries correctly, a combination of the left and right circles is needed. Remember to longe the horse in one direction per recording.
You should record the horse from the outside of the circle, as Sleip is not yet optimised for recording from the inside.
You can start by deactivating access for horses you no longer need to have remotely recorded. If that’s not possible, just contact us at hello@sleip.com and we’ll help you increase your sharing limit.
Click the “two people” sharing button under the horse’s name to view all recorder users the horse has been shared with. Under each user, you’ll see a button to deactivate sharing.
No, you decide how long a horse remains shared. Access to record that horse stays active until you manually deactivate it.
Anyone who will be recording a horse for you and has access to an iPhone 8 or later, or a newer iPad. You’ll need their name and email address to send the invite.
First, double-check that the email address was entered correctly. Ask the client to check their spam or junk folder. They can also try resetting their password using the “Forgot password?” link in the app. If they still can’t log in, contact us at hello@sleip.com and we’ll assist.
At the top of your horse list, tap the “Sharing” button to view all horses currently shared with recorder users. You can also search within this list.
Start by logging in with the credentials sent to you by Sleip. If you haven’t received the email, please check your spam or junk folder. Once logged in, the horse will already be added to your account, and you can begin recording. We recommend watching the instructional videos in the app before making your first recording.
